All About Nick

Nick is the one who keeps things in order. He's handy with tools, sharp on balancing his checkbook, and knows where everything is in the house. He consumes the news like Homer Simpson consumes donuts, and isn't afraid to let you know what's on his mind.

Nick grew up on an apple orchard in the hills of New Hampshire. His parents, brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and niece still live on and run the orchard, which is open to the public for apple picking. Ian and Nick were married on the orchard as well, and Henri picked his first blueberry there when we visited last summer.

Growing up on the orchard, Nick learned a lot of handy skills from his dad, like changing a flat tire, using power tools for fixing things around the house, and tending the garden. Nick learned baking from his mom. The two logged countless hours together in the orchard’s bakery, baking pumpkin bread and apple pies by the dozen. Nick looks forward to teaching our children how to build a birdhouse for the backyard and then make the perfect apple pie.

Nick enjoys many of the activities the Bay Area has to offer, from hiking, to visiting Sonoma’s wine country when friends come to visit, to a simple trip to the farmers’ market on the weekend to buy fresh local produce.

Nick's main interest is science – he manages a science lab for the University of California, San Francisco. A love of science and the world around us is something Nick also looks forward to instilling in our children. We see lots of trips to science and technology museums in our future, an activity Nick did often with his family growing up.

Nick also likes to run, and before Henri came along, he and Ian participated in a running group on Saturday mornings. Even though we don’t run as much as we used to, we’re still close with the friends we made in the running group, and our friends’ children are some of Henri’s closest playmates.
